  • HELP, speedo and rev counter not working

Went out in car tonight and no idea what happened but I now have no dash function except miles meter keeps working.
Luckily I have a vi monitor to use but not very handy,
I've tried a ecu reset with no change
Car sat for 2 years but had done 200+ miles since with no problems,
    Anyone shed any light!!

Ford did have quite a few cluster issues, and I have known a few to die even on RS's.. hopefully that isn't the case as they are expensive.. I would say check the speedo sensor but that would only effect the speedometer (obviously).

If the battery is really low this can cause issues with the clocks so check your battery has a good charge?

Also as Nick said it could be down to a faulty clock. I can think of a Focus RS as I type this that had a problem at only 6k miles and the clock was replaced. This obviously messed all the service history up as his new clocks were set at zero. What I can tell you though is the clock from this car discovered a fault, the dealer didn't even look into repairing it and simply fitted the new clock. The owner of this car with my help managed to talk to the original owner who still had the original clock and he got it back. When he got it back he wanted to know what the fault was so had the clock looked at as he wanted to know the milage of the
        car when the clock failed.

Once taken apart for examination it was discovered that a circuit board had failed and needed re-soldering which he had done and fixed the problem. So the moral of the story is if you are told it needs replacing have someone look at reparing it to retain the correct mileage.

Fingers crossed its something simple Mike.

          I do hope so Clayton,
If it was the speedo would that affect boost gauge, petrol gauge etc.
what I did find when messing about with it was the rev counter etc in the digital read out on bottom of speedo,
          Do you know of one?

Do you nean the test mode Mike?

The Focus ECU has a diagnostic mode which can be accessed through the instrument panel.

To access it hold in the trip reset button while turning the ignition switch to the “on” position. (There is no need to start the engine). Continue to hold the button and within 10 seconds the display should change to “TEST” in LCD font and the needles will do a full sweeping. You can then use the button to cycle through all the various readouts as shown below. (Performing this procedure will reset your trip odometer back to zero)

            Focus diagnostic mode:

Once in test mode you can now cycle through 17 different modes as following:

1 - Gauge sweep (All gauges sweep to their maximum positions then return to normal)
2 - LCD segment test (All LCD segments illuminate so that any faulty segments can be identified)
3 - Bulb test (All ECU-controlled bulbs illuminate so that any faulty bulbs can be identified)
4 - Instrument cluster ROM revision number (“r 22” is shown)
5 - Instrument cluster NVRAM revision number (“E001” is shown)
6 - Diagnostic trouble codes (If there are no diagnostic codes stored the display will alternate between “DTC” and “none”. If codes are presentthey can be sequentially accessed by further presses of the button)
            7 - Vehicle speed in miles/hour (“000.0” is shown)
            8 - Vehicle speed in kilometers/hour (“000.0” is shown)
            9 - Engine speed in revolutions/minute (“0803” is shown)
            10 - Fuel Level
11 - Engine Coolant Temp (centigrade)
12 - Boost Pressure (kilo pascals)
            13 - Battery Voltage
            14 - ABS Test
15 - Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)
            16 - Illumination
            17 - Crank Case Pressure

Have you got good earth's? I know that 1 slightly loose connection is enough to start some electrical trouble...
I had this and my fuel gauge didn't work and the speedo went crazy when driving.Clutch repaired,so checked everything and found it.

Battery is the first thing you need to check Mike.

Let us know how you get on please

If you need a new battery then go for a 390A Genuine Ford Calcium Battery, its the recommended one for the car and will work with all the smart charge system on the alternator as well.

Also regarding clocks and mileage you can get a mileage correction specialist (legal clocker) to come and increase the mileage to the pre-fault value, this maintaining the original and correct mileage on the clocks
